Watch: Mitchell Johnson deliver some unplayable stuff: If a legend like Dennis Lillee hails someone as ‘once in a generation bowler’ then there has to be something really special about that player. Mitchell Johnson’s talent was identified at a young age and he was earmarked for success from the time he toured to England with the Aussie U-19 squad.
After suffering from injuries the left-arm quick rediscovered his lethal past by keeping two objectives in mind: either hit the wicket or hit the batsman.
Mitchell Johnson was at his career best in the 2013-14 Ashes at home. He got 37 wickets in 5 Test matches, at a fantastic average of 13.97 and he was extremely lethal. His hostile spell of 7/40 at Adelaide brought back memories of his 8/61 that had terrorized South Africa five years ago.
With a slinging action, Johnson consistently touches the 150 kph mark but is prone to be wayward at times in his zeal for pace. But the 2013 Ashes in Australia witnessed some consistency as his bouncers were well-directed and aiming the batsman’s head.
His ability to swing the ball both ways makes him a dangerous prospect with the new ball but it’s his brutal short deliveries that set him apart from the other pace bowlers.
Johnson’s stock delivery for right-handers is the one that moves away at an awkward angle. His ability to extract extra bounce on any given wicket adds to his armoury against the left-handers while he also tries to cramp them by bringing the ball back in.
He had bowled his heart out in the Ashes of 2013 and also excelled on the following South African tour helping Australia win the series 2-1. He is the most deadly fast bowler in current cricket without a doubt.
Here is a video which compiles some nasty bouncers Johnson delivered in the 2013 Ashes in Australia:
