The Hobart Hurricanes had three valuable T20 players from around the globe in their squad in the form of Smriti Mandhana, Hayley Matthews and Heather Knight. The trio played only two matches; lost one while defending 159 after having the Melbourne Stars at 23/4 and defeated them on the very next day by a record 72-run win with the trio’s contributions. Matthews caught up a knee injury in the same game as a result, the Hurricanes had to miss out her presence for the remainder of the season.

Since then, the Hurricanes have lost five consecutive matches. With seven defeats in first eight matches, the Hobart franchise is on the edge of getting knocked out. They need to win all their remaining six matches and hope the results of other matches work in their favour. For that to happen, the Hurricanes need something special from Mandhana. The Indian opener failed to display her Kia Super League (KSL) consistency which could have added value to Knight’s all-round efforts.

They will now face the in-form Brisbane Heat in the doubleheader at the Launceston on Sunday. The Brisbane team have won four of their last five matches which includes big wins over Sydney Sixers and Perth Scorchers. They are currently placed at No.3 in the points table having won five out of eight matches they played. The Brisbane Heat went unchanged in their first seven matches in the tournament before they left out Suné Luus for Josie Dooley on Boxing Day.

Pitch Condition/Report:

Aurora Stadium in Launceston has a history of producing low scoring games. In the 2015/16 season of WBBL, three contests were won by defending scores between 110 and 125. Chasing team won one game after restricting the opponent to just 83. The recent most WBBL fixture here was in January 2017 and produced a total of 171. However, the last year’s BBL witnessed the chasing side collapse to a mere 109.

Captain and Vice-Captain Selection:

Sammy-Jo Johnson and Jess Jonnasen have been brilliant in the tournament contributing with both bat and ball. Both the all-rounders cover-up in one of the departments if they fail in the other. The likes of Smriti Mandhana and Heather Knight might produce their ‘A’ game in this crucial match having returned from a break.
