Deepak Chahar was bought back by the defending champions Chennai Super Kings for a staggering INR 14 crore at the IPL 2022 mega auction in February. Unfortunately, for them, he suffered a quadriceps tear during the home T20I series against the West Indies in the same month which forced him to miss the initial matches of this season as he underwent rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.

While he was recovering, the bowling all-rounder suffered a back injury which ruled him out of the tournament with immediate effect. Deepak Chahar will be taking no further part in IPL 2022 but, the question is will he get his entire INR 14 crore salary for the 15th edition of the marquee tournament, and is there a backup option with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) when it comes to such unforeseen situations.

Deepak Chahar likely to get his entire contract amount

Deepak Chahar is a centrally contracted player with the BCCI. He is in the Grade C category in the national cricket board’s 2022 central contracts list which means that he will be paid his entire salary for this edition’s IPL despite being unable to feature even in a single game due to injury. BCCI has a players’ insurance policy for its contracted players and the board pays them through that policy if they miss out on an IPL season due to an injury. This rule came into effect from IPL 2011 season.

In case a non-contracted player gets injured and doesn’t play even a single game of the season, then he misses out on the entire contract amount of the season. As per the policy, all the centrally contracted players get compensated if they miss the IPL season irrespective of when they sustained an injury. In case, a contracted player gets injured and ruled out during the IPL, then half of the contracted amount is paid by the BCCI while the rest of the amount is paid by the franchise.
