Pakistan ended their 18-match World Cup losing streak as they defeated West Indies in a rain-affected game. On a pitch where run-making was very difficult, Pakistan’s Nida Dar aced the game with her career-best spell of 4 for 10 in the 20-over a side game. The last time Pakistan won a game in the World Cup was way back in 2009 when they had defeated the same opponent.

West Indies suffered their third defeat in the ongoing Women’s World Cup 2022 as Pakistan won by eight wickets, with seven balls to spare. West Indies have themselves placed intact at the third position even after the loss, with 6 points to their name. India, England, and New Zealand stand at four points each, with India being in fourth place as a result of a better NRR.

As far as the match is concerned, batting first, West Indies scored 89 runs at the loss of seven wickets in 20 overs with Deandra Dottin (27 off 35) being the highest scorer for her side. Pakistan chased down the score in 18.5 overs, and finished the game at 90/2 with Muneeba Ali Siddiqui (37* off 43) being the top scorer. Pakistan spinner Nida Dar stole the show as she helped her team restrict their opponents to a low total by dismissing Dottin, Shemaine Campbelle, Chinelle Henry, and Kycia Knight.

Muneeba gave a great start to her team in her maiden World Cup game. Pakistan were able to stay up with the asking rate despite losing Sidra Ameen early in the chase, thanks to Muneeba’s ability to identify gaps and boundary-placing skills. Her top-scoring effort of 37 off 43 didn’t come without risk, but it provided the team with a strong foundation.

Fight for the third and fourth position continues

Looking at the current scenario, Australia and South Africa seem to have secured their spot in the semi-finals having won all the games they’ve played so far. With eight matches remaining in the knock-out stage, it will be India, West Indies, England and New Zealand fighting for the remaining two spots.
