Wicket-keeper batsman Dinesh Karthik was the star of India’s win over Bangladesh in the final of the Nihadas Trophy 2018. He single-handedly pulled India from the jaws of defeat when not many thought that the visitors could take the cup home. Karthik walked in to bat when India required 32 runs from 2 overs, and what soon followed was only boundaries.

His innings of an unbeaten 29 were laced by four fours and three sixes. In the last ball, when India needed 5 runs to win, he kept his cool and hit a six, thus taking India home and also avoiding a Super Over for them.

In the wake of his heroics, several cricketers took to Twitter in praise of him. One among those is Yuvraj Singh, who wrote, “You beauty! @dineshkarthik.” Yuvraj himself has been one of the fines hitters for India, as is evident from his record of six sixes in an over.

Rohit Sharma recognized Karthik’s expertise

Skipper Rohit Sharma too praised the Tamil Nadu cricketer, saying that he sent him to bat in the end only because he had recognised his talent as a finisher.

“It was because we wanted one of the experienced guys batting at the end. I thought Mustafizur would bowl probably the 18th and the 20th over. We knew he would come out with his off-cutters and Dinesh probably would have been a better choice at that point, because when I got out there were eight or nine overs left.”

Captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders

Karthik has spent most of his career on the fringes because MS Dhoni has always been picked over him in the limited-overs set-up. However, with Dhoni’s form waning, experts now opine that Karthik can be Dhoni’s ideal replacement after the latter chooses to put down his papers. As for now, the 32-year-old will be looking forward to captain KKR in IPL 11, which begins on April 7 in Mumbai.
