This Indian Premier League auction saw more players from Afghanistan being sold than both Sri Lanka and Bangladesh combined. While Mohammed Nabi and Rashid Khan had been part of the Sun Risers Hyderabad set up last year, Mujeeb Rahman and Zahir Khan were the new entrants.

While Mujeeb went on to showcase his talent for Kings XI Punjab, The 19-year-old chinaman bowler, unfortunately, saw himself get injured. In a candid chat, Zahir Khan spoke about the disappointment of missing out on the major league. He further spoke about his teammates and lauded the coaches for their support.

Even I had a dream of playing the IPL

The prospect of playing a major league would’ve been diving deep in Zahir. Being one of the only four players from your country is definitely a proud moment. Sadly, an untimely injury meant that it was not meant to be. He stated that it was really disappointing on his part to get out of action.

“It is a big league, and everyone wants to play here. I was elated when Rajasthan Royals picked me. But then, this is how life is. Little did I know that a normal dive during a practice match would lead to such a grave shoulder injury. The doctor said that I won’t be able to play for 5-6 weeks. That was disappointing.” He was quoted as saying by Sportstar.

Shane Warne told me that I’m a good bowler

Speaking about Rajasthan Royals mentor Shane Warne, he conceded that Warne didn’t watch him bowl since he joined the camp late. However, Zahir managed to get some words of inspiration from the legendary spinner. He also told that skipper Ajinkya Rahane had been quite supportive.

“The coaches were good. Shane Warne also. Unfortunately, I had picked up the injury before he had joined the camp, so he could not watch me bowl. But he had seen my videos and told me that I am a good bowler. He wished me a speedy recovery. Captain Ajinkya Rahane supported me a lot too. It was great to be with the boys. I hope to get selected next year.”

I speak to Mujeeb and Rashid daily and they’re happy with the way things have gone so far

When asked to comment about something which impressed him in this IPL, he took no time to mention the coaches at work. He not only credited RR coaches but also those belonging to other camps for their supportive nature. Being in constant touch with his Afghan mates Rashid Khan and Mujeeb, both were extremely confident with the backing given by coach and captain.

“I like the attitude of coaches. They would never tell you negatives. The Rajasthan Royals coaches gave me a lot of confidence, as a result of which, I was bowling really well at the nets. Even Mujeeb, Rashid is getting that confidence from their respective coaches and captains. I speak to them daily and they are also happy with the way things have gone so far.” He told according to Sportstar.
