During the 2011-12 Commonwealth Bank ODI series in Australia, Dhoni allegedly took a decision that left many in the team shocked. He claimed that they cannot have Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar in the same playing XI because they are slow on the field.

Gambhir and Tendulkar missed one game in the series, while Sehwag missed three. India finished the tri-series with only three wins in eight matches and failed to qualify for the finals. Tendulkar and Sehwag had a dismal outing in the series, as they scored only 143 runs and 65 runs respectively.

A few months later, Tendulkar retired from the format, and Sehwag and Gambhir were dropped due to bad form. In the following year, India promoted Rohit Sharma to open the innings, and Virat Kohli was promoted to number three. Shikhar Dhawan was roped in to open along with Rohit in the format.
