Usman Qadir, son of former Pakistani leg-spinner Abdul Qadir, aspires to play international cricket though not for the country his father represented but Australia. The 25-year-old has found Australia increasingly receptive to his increasingly effective leg-breaks, googlies and top-spinners and made his debut for Western Australia against Victoria in JLT One-Day Cup in Melbourne on September 26. Usman returned with the figures of 3 for 50 in 10 overs to help his side win the game by 6 wickets.

Usman’s feat was special for it was for the same city’s Carlton Cricket Club that his father took a record-equalling tally of 76 wickets in club cricket and it was the beginning of his relationship with Australia which now has seen his son picking up the baton from where he left it. In Wednesday’s game, Usman tasted success in his very first over – the 10th of the match – when he deceived former Australian international Cameron White who got stumped.

Usman eyeing 2020 World T20

Usman has been trying to play for Australia in the 2020 World Twenty 20 and has identified his qualification to get a distinguished talent visa and its attendant fast-tracking of an Australian citizen said an ESPNcricinfo report. It said that his application has to be sponsored by Cricket Australia and he has to demonstrate his skills to show that they are beneficial for Australian cricket.

He is trying to follow the footsteps of another Pakistani spinner Fawad Alam who went to Australia and played a few ODIs and T20Is for them.

“When I saw Fawad, the government changed the law for him, I am going to apply for a distinguished talent visa and before that I’ve got permanent residency and hopefully I will get citizenship as well in two years’ time. My goal is to play for Australia in the 2020 World Twenty20. Hopefully, definitely [I will be eligible],” he was quoted as saying.

Usman, who played for Pakistan in Under-19 World Cup in Australia in 2012, was encouraged by former South Australian coach Darren Berry to play club cricket for Adelaide. Usman has played eight first-class and 18 List A games, did well there and seemed to go up the ranks.
