Ireland managed to draw the 5-match ODI series against Afghanistan by winning the final game by a 5-wicket margin. The Ireland bowlers once again ran through the hosts’ top-order by reducing them to 50/4. However, their skipper Asghar Afghan batted throughout to score an unbeaten 82 and was supported by the likes of Mohammad Nabi (40) and Rashid Khan (35*). Chasing Afghanistan’s 216/6, the Irish team got off to a flyer. Paul Stirling and Andrew Balbirnie scored 70 and 68 respectively as Ireland chased down the target with 16 balls to spare.

A game for the spinners:

78.2 – Number of overs bowled by the spinners in this game; the most by spin bowlers in a single ODI match. The Afghanistan spinners bowled 39.2 overs while the Irish spinners delivered 39 overs.

The Sri Lanka-Zimbabwe ODI hosted by the Colombo (SSC) in 1998 had a total of 456 balls (76 overs) bowled by the spin bowlers; the previous most overs from spinners in an ODI.


Rashid Khan @ 200:

20y 171d – At the age of 20 years and 171 days, Rashid Khan became the youngest player to bag 200 wickets in international cricket. Waqar Younis was 21 years and 59 days old when he claimed his 200th International wicket. Saqlain Mushtaq (21y 13d) and Irfan Pathan (21y 324d) are the other bowlers with 200 wickets across all formats before turning 22.


2 – A total of 158 players have scored a minimum of 500 runs and also bagged 50 wickets in the ODI format. However, only two players have scored those runs at 100+ S/R and took wickets at less than an S/R of 25.

New Zealand’s Corey Anderson and Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan are those two players. Rashid scored 782 runs at an S/R of 100.77 and picked up 123 wickets at an S/R of 23 from 57 ODIs he played thus far.


Asghar @2000:

2013 – Asghar Afghan became the 3rd player from Afghanistan to complete 2000 runs in ODI cricket. Mohammad Nabi (2565) and Mohammad Shahzad (2562) are the only players with more than 2000 ODI runs for Afghanistan.


226 – The 226 runs aggregated by Asghar Afghan in this series are the most by an Afghanistan captain in an ODI series/tournament. Nawroz Mangal scored 205 runs during the Division One League in 2010 across six games with ODI status.

Afghan’s 201 runs during the 2017 series in India against Ireland are the previous highest aggregate for an Afghanistan skipper in a bilateral ODI series.
