The 15th edition of the Asia Cup is days away as it is set to commence on August 27, 2022, in the UAE. Six teams will participate to be crowned the champions of Asia. The ultimate and final clash is set to take place on September 11 with the tournament spanning two weeks. Stadiums in Sharjah and Dubai will host the 13 matches including the summit clash that will be played in the Dubai international stadium. The competition will be in the T20I format in order for the teams to prepare for the T20 World Cup beginning in October this year.

Usually a 50-over championship, this is the second time the Asia Cup will be played in the T20I format with the last one happening in 2016, also just before the T20 WC, which India had won by defeating the hosts Bangladesh in the finals. The historic tournament made its debut way back in the year 1984 when India became the first winner of this series. Since then, the Asian giants have won the title a record seven times, Sri Lanka five, and Pakistan on two occasions.

The inaugural and the defending champions India have won back-to-back titles in 2016 and 2018 and will be eyeing their eighth in the forthcoming event. Notably, over the years, there have been solid and consistent performers from the Asian teams who have shone in these renowned tournaments. Few Sri Lankan players have dominated in the past and they still hold the top place in the respective categories.

Meanwhile, let’s take a look at some of the records in the Asia Cup: (ODI format)

Most runs – Former Sri Lanka legendary batter Sanath Jayasuriya has struck the most runs in Asia Cup tournaments. The Sri Lankan great scored 1220 runs at an average of 53.04 and a strike rate of 102.52 with six centuries and three fifties. His highest score was 130 in the 24 innings that he batted.

Best individual score – Modern-day great Virat Kohli holds the record for the highest individual score in the competition. The run-machine Kohli had hammered 183 off 148 with the help of 22 fours and a six against arch-rivals Pakistan in the run-chase of 330 in Mirpur in 2012.

Most wickets – Another Sri Lankan legend Lasith Malinga tops this list of most wickets in the Asia Cup series. The yorker specialist snared 33 scalps at an average of 18.84 with an economy rate of just 4.70 in 15 innings. His best bowling figures were 5/34 which came against Pakistan in Dambulla in the year 2010.

Best bowling – Mystery Sri Lankan spinner Ajantha Mendis bamboozled India in 2008 final when he took figures of 6/13 to completely tear apart the Indians. The spin bowler helped his side in winning the title and it also remains the best figure by a bowler to date.

Highest total – Pakistan have smashed the highest total in the 50-overs competition. They hammered 385/7 against Bangladesh in Dambulla in 2010 courtesy of a breathtaking century from Shahid Afridi who scored 124 off just 60 which included 17 fours and four maximums.

Lowest total – Bangladesh have suffered the lowest total in Asia Cups. They got bundled out for just 87 in 34.2 overs against Pakistan in Dhaka in the year 2000. Chasing a massive target of 321, the Bangla Tigers had no answer whatsoever against the Pakistani pacers as they faced a hammering.

Most POTM – Jayasuriya once again tops the list this time with the Most Player of the Match awards. Former Lankan captain grabbed the award five times in Asia Cup history which is the most by any player. His teammate Kumar Sangakkara and the Pakistan duo of Afridi and Shoaib Malik won the award four times each.

Now, let’s take a look at some of the records in the Asia Cup: (T20I format)

Most runs – Hong Kong’s Babar Hayat has struck the most runs in Asia Cup T20 tournament, which was held in 2016. The right-handed batter amassed 194 runs in just three innings at an average of 64.66 and a strike rate of 160.33 with one century and one half-century. His best score was 122 which came against Oman in the qualifiers.

Best individual score – Except for the qualifying rounds, India’s Rohit Sharma holds the record for the highest individual score in Asia Cup T20I series. The dashing right-handed batter mustered 83 off just 55 with the help of seven fours and three maximums against Bangladesh in the opening fixture of the 2016 edition.

Most wickets – Right-arm medium pace bowler from UAE, Amjad Javed has taken the most wickets in the competition. In seven innings, the seamer snared 12 scalps at an average of 14.08 and a strike rate of 11.5 with an economy rate of 7.34 and the best figures of 3/25.

Best bowling – Excluding the qualifiers, Sri Lanka’s premier fast bowler Lasith Malinga has taken the best figures in the tournament. The yorker king Malinga delivered a match-winning spell of 4/26 against UAE in four overs in the second match of the 2016 campaign. The Island nation defeated UAE by 14 runs in a low-scoring encounter and Lasith grabbed the Player of the Match award.

Highest total – India registered the highest total of 166/6 against Bangladesh in the main competition. Batting first, the Men in Blue posted a competition total thanks to Rohit’s innings of 83 and an 18-ball 31 cameo from Hardik Pandya lower down the order. India restricted Bangladesh to just 121/7 and won the clash by 45 runs.

Lowest total – UAE have recorded the lowest total in the tournament’s history. They managed to post only 81/9 in their allotted 20 overs against India in the ninth match of the 2016 Asia Cup. Bhuvaneswar Kumar was the pick of the bowlers for his spell of 2/8 in four overs. India raced away to the target in 10.1 overs and won the game by nine wickets.

Most POTM – Star India duo of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have won the Player of the Match awards two times each. Both played five matches each in the 2016 victorious campaign under the leadership of MS Dhoni. Nine other different players won the award once in the tournament.
