South Africa clinched the three-match ODI series against Australia by a 2-1 margin as they won the series-deciding match in Hobart by 40 runs. The Saffers were reduced to 55/3 by the 16th over after Australia elected to bowl. However, Faf du Plessis and David Miller scored centuries to guide their side to a huge total.

The duo helped South Africa score 130 runs in the final ten to finish on 320/5. Australia recovered from 39/3 in the chase thanks to a run-a-ball century from Shaun Marsh. However, some quality death bowling from the visiting side ensured the Aussies made only 33 runs from the last 40 deliveries when they needed 74.

All the major stats and numbers that were recorded during the series-decider in Hobart:

0.181 – Australia’s win-loss record in ODI cricket in 2018. They won only two of their 13 ODIs losing in 11 games. This is easily their worst win-loss ratio in this format in a calendar year. Australia‘s previous worst was 0.5 in 1972 and 1977 where they lost two games and won one among the three matches they played.

3 – Shaun Marsh has scored three centuries in his last six ODI innings with all of them coming, being on the losing side. He thus became only the 5th player to hit three ODI tons in losing cause in a calendar year. Sachin Tendulkar in 1998, Brendon Taylor in 2011, David Warner in 2016 and Aaron Finch in 2018 scored three 100s in ODI losses.

5 – Australia have now lost their fifth consecutive bilateral series in ODI cricket; their longest losing streak. The Aussies lost four consecutive bilateral series/one-off games between 1982 and 1984. This is also the first time that Australia lost back to back bilateral ODI series at home. They lost to England 4-1 at the start of 2018.

6 – All the six centuries in the ODI format for Australia in 2018 have come on the losing side. These are the most number of ODI centuries for Australia in the losing cause in a calendar year. They had five such centuries in 2016 and four in 1996.

This is the first year since 1995 that Australia had no century coming in a winning cause in this format. 1995 was also the last calendar year without an individual century by an Australian.

7 – As many as seven maiden overs were delivered by both the teams in this ODI which are the joint most in a 50-over match with 600+ match aggregate. The 2007 Auckland ODI between Australia and New Zealand also witnessed seven maiden overs and the match aggregated 676 runs.

252 – The 252-run partnership between Faf du Plessis and David Miller is the 3rd highest partnership in ODI cricket for the 4th wicket. This is also the 3rd highest partnership of South Africa for any wicket in this format.

252 – This 252-run stand between Faf and Miller is the highest partnership in ODI cricket for any pair against Australia. The previous highest was the 237-run opening stand between Marvan Atapattu and Sanath Jayasuriya in the 2003 Sydney ODI.

320/5 – South Africa’s total of 320/5 is their first 300+ ODI total against Australia in the latter’s own backyard. Their previous highest ODI total against the Aussies in Australia was 288/6 in the 2009 Perth ODI.

353 – A total of 353 runs were scored for the 4th wicket in this game (252 by South Africa and 101 by Australia). These are the most number of runs scored for the 4th wicket in an ODI game surpassing 335 runs during the 2004 India-Zimbabwe ODI at Adelaide Oval.

506 – The 506 runs scored in this game after losing the 3rd wicket by both the teams are the 3rd most runs in an ODI game. The 2017 India-England Cuttack ODI aggregated a record 552 runs while the 2004 India-Zimbabwe ODI in Adelaide witnessed 507 runs being scored.
