The ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 has officially got underway with the hosts New Zealand Women locking horns with the West Indies Women at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on March 4. Match 2 of the tournament will see South Africa W take on Bangladesh W at the University Oval, Dunedin on March 5. South Africa are one of the title contenders after Australia as they eye a maiden world title having finished twice as the semifinalists in the 2000 and 2017 editions while Bangladesh look forward to making a mark in the quadrennial event. Meanwhile, it needs to be noted that the Asian team is making its maiden appearance in the Women’s World Cup.
Head to Head record:
As far as One-Day Internationals are concerned, both teams have met each other on 17 occasions with Bangladesh W managing just two wins and the rest 15 matches going in the favor of the Proteas. It has been total domination by South Africa W in the overall head-to-head encounters. In May 2018, the Proteas had handed a 5-0 whitewash to Bangladesh at home. However, it remains to be seen who would be the winner on March 5 when both teams lock horns in the Women’s World Cup for the very first time.

Top performers:
Ayabonga Khaka has been the best performer among the two teams. The right medium-pacer has been one of South Africa’s go-to bowlers along with the tearaway fast bowler Shabnim Ismail. Khaka was the team’s star performer in their agonizing semis defeat against the eventual champions England in the 2017 edition of the quadrennial event. While her bowling partners turned out to be expensive, she was the only one who kept the Proteas in the hunt with an economic bowling spell finishing with 2/28 from her 10 overs at an economy rate of 2.8 including two maidens.
The 29-year-old is the seasoned campaigner for South Africa heading into this competition and is currently the joint-leading wicket-taker in the 50-overs format. The Middledrift cricketer had also registered her maiden five-wicket haul during the ODI series win against the West Indies and as of now, is just four scalps away from completing 100 wickets in One Day Internationals.
