Bangladeshi cricketer Arafat Sunny has got entwined in a scandal after he admitted to secretly marrying a woman, and shared intimate pictures of her on social media, despite being married already. The woman, who was identified as Nasrin Sultana, filed a case against him under the ICT Act in January following which Sunny was arrested and taken into custody. However, at that time it was not known that the pair had married.

The left-arm spinner was accused of opening a counterfeit account in Nasrin’s name on Facebook and posting “intimate photos” which she found offensive and defamatory. Nasrin also alleged Sunny’s mother, Nargis Akter for apparently beating her up. If Sunny is found guilty of the charges, he could be jailed for up to 14 years and fined 10 million takas under tough cyber laws.

In the interim, the court has granted Sunny a bail until July 6 and has also asked him to strike a negotiation with Nasrin within the stipulated deadline. Sunny’s lawyers have told the court that Sunny wanted to keep Nasrin with the status of wife, and has even rented a separate flat for her.

Wants to keep both the wives

Speaking to a local daily, Sunny’s lawyer Jewel Ahmed was quoted as saying, “She wants Sunny to divorce his first wife, which is not possible. Now his first wife will also sue him if she gets divorced. So Sunny wants to keep both the wives.”

Also, being under pressure from the court to negotiate with his second wife, Sunny wants to keep both of his marriages alive.

He has played 16 one-day internationals and 10 Twenty20 internationals, has also been warned by the Bangladesh Cricket Board that he could face a ban from the sport. Sunny has earlier suffered a similar fate when he was suspended from international matches during the 2016 ICC World Twenty20 for an illegal bowling action. He has been playing domestic first-class cricket since.
