The eleventh edition of Indian franchise based domestic T20 tournament, Indian Premier League (IPL) is around the corner and the preparations seem to be in full swing, fans are eagerly waiting as the excitement reaches a higher echelon. The battle to claim the coveted title is all set to begin in months and promises to be a bigger and better than all its previous editions.

The first decade of IPL witnessed some nail-biting encounters. It comes as an obvious fact that players from all cricketing nations will look to express themselves in the best possible way and help their team cross the winning line. However, when the idea was put to the action back in the year 2008, not many cricket pundits thought that IPL will one day help the penultimate cricketing body the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to earn over 2000 crores in its eleventh edition.

If the reports are to be believed, the estimates which have come out after all the permutations and combination is that IPL will offer 16 times more profit during the 45-day IPL window than it is likely to in the remaining 320 days of the year. This net surplus will accrue after BCCI’s expenditure on the game’s infrastructure and other heads, amounting to approximately Rs 1,272 crore against an income of Rs 3,413 crore.

The Future Tours Programme believes that “the board will see a marginal drop of Rs 5 crore in the surplus from the men’s team’s international tours, leading to a substantial drop of Rs 78 crore in income from media rights alone.”

May Not Play Test Matches in New Zealand

Interestingly, the projections indicate that the Indian men’s team may not play any Test matches in New Zealand when they tour early next year after a gap of five years. The reason which helps the news to become legit is that BCCI believes they will lose a lot of money as the games are expected to start around 3 in the morning. Furthermore, the 2019 World Cup is scheduled to take place in England and Wales in early months of 2019, so BCCI wishes to give Indian team as many 50 overs matches as possible.

A senior official from BCCI told the TOI, “There is a lot of risk of losing money in a five-day game starting at 3 am India time (in New Zealand). Anyway, it will be a World Cup year by the time India travel to New Zealand. India will be playing just white-ball cricket after the Tests in Australia get over till the World Cup in England arrives.”

“India will host Australia after they come back from New Zealand and will travel to Zimbabwe for three T20Is before the 2019 IPL.”
