He won’t be at the helm, but he isn’t going. Former Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni sparked life into a dragging Monday evening by announcing his decision to step down as the captain of the Indian ODI and T20I teams. Of course, he didn’t do it himself, he never does that; the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) sent out a press note with the news with a word from the CEO.

While most were surprised, his fans were shocked; pundits saw it as a perfect move – the right time for Dhoni to hand over the reins to Virat Kohli – he has the series against England to get accustomed to the things with ODIs and then will be in the best position to assess his team for the Champions Trophy in a few months time. Though there was this sense of satisfaction there was also the lump – the most successful Indian skipper would no longer captain the team.

The best part, he chose to stick around, he hasn’t yet pronounced his retirement ideas but he won’t either. To be optimistic Dhoni will at least play until the Champions Trophy and then decide about the future. BCCI posted a special tribute video for the skipper. It touched upon the various aspects first of his cricket when he smacked the Sri Lankans in Jaipur for a record 183*. Some of the sixes he has hit to finish off games for the team. Then the World T20 2007 final – asking Sourav Ganguly to captain the team in the final moments of his last Test.

The iconic six in the final of the World Cup 2011, the last ball of the Champions Trophy 2013 when England needed 6 off the last ball from Ravi Ashwin and how he jumped in joy when the ball ended in a dot. And the very recent run out – an example of his brilliance behind the wickets where he deflected the ball back onto the stumps without even looking at them.
