Sydney Thunder batsman Ben Rohrer believes that face masks for the protection of the bowlers could be the next big thing in the game. Rohrer was struck and struck hard on the collarbone and throat from a Callum Ferguson drive. The left-handed batsman was at the non-striker’s end when Ferguson drove one straight with Rohrer backing up at the non-striker’s end in Yesterday’s clash against Brisbane Heat at the Gabba.
Rohrer missed Thunder’s fielding innings with his injury. However, he is likely to be recovered by the next match. Last weekend in a domestic T20 match in New Zealand, Otago’s Warren Barnes wore a protective headgear while bowling. Rohrer believes that protective headgear is something that future holds on for the game after his injury scare.
Rohrer talks about protective headwear
“I saw that … possibly, if guys keep hitting them that hard (it could become commonplace),” Rohrer said of the protective headwear. “I know the umpires have started to do it and I think that’s a great move with the helmets, and obviously the batters have helmets on at the other end too, so I think that (bowlers wearing protective headwear) is the next step.”
He further pointed out at Chris Lynn, who knocks the ball dead hard. Rohrer said that if Lynn hit a ball towards the bowler, the bowler is in all sorts of trouble handling the pace of the ball. The left-handed batsman was left shaken after the ball hit him in the chin area but returned to complete the innings with the bat.
“I think the collarbone probably saved it from a flush blow on the windpipe, so once I took a breath and was able to swallow, I thought everything should be alright,” he added before telling that he would return for their next game.
