One would think Stuart Broad holds the record of giving away the most number of runs off a single over, thanks to Yuvraj Singh’s daredevil stunt. But as it turns out, Lalmatia’s Sujon Mahmud stands head and shoulders above the Englishman. The Dhaka Second Division Cricket League in Bangladesh has made news for all the wrong reasons because Sujon Mahmud gave away – wait for it – 92 runs in all of 4 legal deliveries.

Mahmud’s boundless four balls consisted of 13 wide balls – off which he gave away a whopping 65 runs – and 3 no balls which resulted in another 15 runs. That amounts to 80 runs without technically bowling a single delivery. By the time Mahmud had bowled his 4th legal ball, he had offered 92 runs to the opposition Axiom Cricketers. Believe it or not, Axiom Cricketers had won the game before the first over was completed.

Let’s wind the clock back a little bit to understand what led to Mahmud’s deluge of extras. Lalmatia were put into bat, and a batting collapse saw them scrape to 88 runs. The side was bundled out after 14 overs, with the dressing room fuming over the umpire’s biased decisions.

Lalmatia General Secretary Adnan Rahman Dipon said, “It started at the toss. My captain was not allowed to see the coin and we were sent to bat first and as expected, the umpires decisions came against us.”

“My players are young, aged around 17, 18 and 19. They could not tolerate the injustice and thus reacted by giving away 92 runs in four deliveries,” Dipon told the Dhaka Tribune.

It thus becomes clear that Mahmud’s interminable over was in retaliation to the umpires’ partiality towards the Axiom Cricketers. As the Lalmatia official was asked whether or not there were any officials overlooking proceedings to maintain discipline in the game, Dipon said, “We (Lalmatia team) knew that the outcome of the game will be negative due to which most of the officials and senior players did not appear for the game. Even my regular captain did not show up for the game. I only got to know of the incident once the game got over in just 14 overs.”

The league is organized by the Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis. CCDM second division league coordinator Jahid Hossain stated that he had indeed learned of the outrageous incident.

“But nothing has come officially to us (CCDM) yet. I was moderating another game (at Jahangirnagar University). I do not know if anything was written in the umpires’ report. The umpires’ report goes to the BCB umpiring committee,” Jahid informed.

Perhaps the only positive that Sujon Mahmud can take out of this incident is that he will be immortalised in the record books.
