Cricket Australia is expected to make some major decisions in the coming times, with national captains Aaron Finch and Tim Paine enduring tough times lately. While Test captain Tim Paine has been under scanner after losing the Test series against India, limited-overs skipper Aaron Finch’s form over the past few months has become a point of concern. Moreover, Finch and Paine are ageing 34 and 36 respectively and hence, many believe CA should start planning for their successors. In a recent interaction, Brad Hogg presented his opinion on the same.

Former Australian spinner Brad Hogg has backed Finch to lead the side in the ICC T20 World Cup later this year. However, the southpaw believes that wicket-keeper Alex Carey should assume the leadership role after the showpiece event. Carey has emerged as a vital part of Australia’s white-ball team in the last few years. On top of that, the 29-year-old has also served as Australia’s joint vice-captain in limited-overs cricket alongside Pat Cummins for nearly two years.

Alex Carey and Pat Cummins should be Australia’s next captains: Brad Hogg

“I would prefer two different skippers in limited-overs and Test cricket. I think Australia have enough squad depth to make two sides. I love to see Aaron Finch as a white-ball captain although he is under pressure with his batting form. He should definitely remain captain till T20 World Cup later this year. After that, Alex Carey might take the role as many see him as a promising leader,” Brad Hogg told Times Now.

Speaking on Paine’s successor, Hogg, like many experts, has backed Pat Cummins to take the leadership role in the longest format. The 50-year-old opined that the top-ranked Test bowler is a brilliant cricketer and a role model to many. However, the former spinner also asserted that the right-arm speedsters might have to quit T20 leagues like IPL to manage his workload if he succeeds Paine.

“I think Australia’s most deserving candidate for the captaincy both off and on the field is Pat Cummins. I think he is a fantastic role model and a brilliant cricketer. I think he is just perfect for the role like he does for New South Wales. The only issue I have is that the fast bowlers do have a lot more work compared to others. Pat may have to sacrifice playing other domestic leagues such as the IPL to make sure he is going to play the majority of the games in National colours,” added Hogg.
