The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) got underway on Tuesday off with a match between Guyana Amazon Warriors and Trinbago Knight Riders. Rain played spoilsport once again and the match started 90 minutes late only to be reduced to 17 overs per side. The Knight Riders won the toss and elected to bowl first. With T20 cricket taking place after very long, fans were very excited for this match.

The Guyana team did not have a good start as they lost Brandon King in the very first over for a duck. His fellow opener Chandrapaul Hemraj was dismissed soon after. A good partnership between Ross Taylor and Shimron Hetmyer helped them get the required start. Taylor was dismissed on 33 as Sunil Narine broke the 50-run partnership between the duo.

Post the batsman’s dismissal, Hetmyer showed his aggressive side and started playing some big shots. He ended up unbeaten on 63 off 44 deliveries. His knock, along with cameos from Nicholas Pooran and Keemo Paul, ensured the side reached 144 runs at the end of 17 overs, losing five wickets. Narine got two wickets, while Ali Khan, Jayden Seales and Dwayne Bravo scalped one each.

With a target of 145 in 17 overs, Narine and Lendil Simmons walked out to open the batting. The latter was dismissed for 17 runs after playing a scratchy knock. The former, on the other hand, was at his aggressive best. He along with Colin Munro helped his side get some very quick runs on the board. Munro played a cameo of 17 in 7 balls boosting the scoring rate.

The smashing opener lost his wicket after scoring a quick fire 50 in just 27 balls. Darren Bravo played a guiding knock making 30 runs in 27 balls. After losing Kieron Pollard early, Brandon King took an insane catch to dismiss Tim Seifert for just two runs. Despite a few hiccups in the end, the team successfully chased the total with Dwayne Bravo hitting a four to get his side over the line.

For the Guyana team, Naveen-ul-Haq and Imran Tahir picked two wickets, while Romario Shepherd and Keemo Paul got a wicket each. The Trinbago Knight Riders won by 4 wickets and with two balls to spare. With this victory they become the first team to open their account in the CPL 2020.

The second game of the day saw the defending champions Barbados Tridents taking on the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. After opting to bowl first, the Patriots left the opposition reeling at 8/3 by the third over thanks to Sohail Tanvir and Sheldon Cottrell. But Kyle Mayers and skipper Jason Holder revived the innings scoring 37 and 38 runs respectively.

After the latter got out in the 13th over, the Tridents feared of getting bowled out well inside their quota of 20 overs. But Mitchell Santner (20) and Rashid Khan (26*) batted well to propel the side to 153 runs for the loss of nine wickets after 20 overs. Tanvir, Cottrell and skipper Rayad Emrit scalped two wickets each for the Patriots.

Rashid and Santner star with the ball too

The Patriots were decent in the chase throughout with all the batsmen getting starts. After losing both their openers by the seventh over, Joshua Da Silva and Ben Dunk shepherded the innings with a 50-run stand. However, the latter’s dismissal sucked the momentum out of the innings. Silva held one end but he was struggling to score quickly.

When Denesh Ramdin got out, they still needed 30 off 16 deliveries with a set batsman in the middle. But Silva couldn’t up the ante and despite Sohail Tanvir’s quickfire 16 off 10 deliveries, they ended up reaching only 147 runs in their 20 overs. Rashid and Santner returned with the figures of 2/27 and 2/18 respectively while skipper Holder also conceded only 21 runs in his four overs as the Tridents began their title defence with a win.
