Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath sparked off a debate about the caste of Lord Hanuman last month. While campaigning in Alwar district in Rajasthan, he said that the deity was a ‘Dalit’. This resulted in quite a deliberation and there are many people who are trying to have their say on the issue. Former cricketer Chetan Chauhan also joined the conversation apart from the spiritual and political leaders.

Chauhan said that the caste of Lord Hanuman shouldn’t be discussed as he is a sportsperson. He added that Hanuman used to wrestle and said that many sportspeople still worship him for power and energy. The former cricketer even went on to give an explanation to support his point.

I consider him as God and do not want any caste associated with Hanuman

“I believe that he (Lord Hanuman) was a sportsman who use to wrestle with his enemies. All the sportsmen of our country worship him as they require power and energy like him to emerge victorious. The players do not worship him because of his caste.

“There is no caste of a Saint, there is no caste of a mystic and in the same way, we believe in Hanuman Ji. I consider him as God; I do not want him to get associated with some sought of caste,” Chetan Chauhan told reporters as quoted by Latestly.

“Bajrang bali hamari bharatiya parampara mein ek aise lokdevta hain jo swayam vanvaasi hai, girvasi hain, Dalit hain, vanchit hai (Hanuman was a tribal, a forest dweller, a Dalit and was deprived)…,” said Yogi (as quoted in the Economic Times) back then which stirred up all this controversy. There have been several protests, opinions and legal actions since then.
