Even after having an average tournament in the Asia Cup, there are three players who will call themselves lucky to feature in the Indian team for the T20 World Cup. Now, with players like Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson, Ravi Bishnoi and so many others sitting outside, there’s a lot of hubbub in the social media portraying their emotion against the team selection.
Now, there have been a lot of questions on Rishabh Pant’s form and looks like the BCCI decided to back the youngster. Was it fair though considering the talent the Indian team possess at the moment? Who could have replaced him in the squad? Look no further here are-
3 players who could have been axed but weren't for the T20 World Cup
1. Rishabh Pant
The squashbucking middle order batter Rishabh Pant is yet to prove in T20I cricket. He has been a runaway match winner for India in Test cricket and to an extent in the ODI cricket but his numbers in the T20I cricket are the one that deserves to be discussed.
In the 58 T20I matches that the southpaw has played, he has scored only 934 runs at an average of 23.94. Now, being a middle order batter who’s known for finishing games, the stats look very poor. He has been given ample opportunities but couldn’t really perform to his potential. The fans thought Asia Cup to be his final test but even after not performing well, Pant has kept his place in the team.
The conclusion that can be drawn is that Pant is a left-handed batter and India need someone with his qualities in the middle. Now, the discussion always took place on the importance of a left-handed batter in the middle but with the kind of form he is in, Pant is not contributing on a large scale. Thus, without any doubt, the 24-year-old will call himself really lucky. A lot of fans on social media expressed how Sanju Samson could have been selected in place of him.
