5. Vasbert Drakes – Border v Free State at East London in 2002
In September 2002, Border were taking on Free State in a SuperSport series game in East London. Border won the toss and elected to bat. West Indies fast bowler Vasbert Drakes was to feature in the game for Pieter Strydom & Co.
Drakes had completed playing the ICC Champions Trophy 2002 in Sri Lanka and was to travel from Colombo to East London by flight. However, his plane was delayed and even though the speedster was pushed lower and lower in the batting order, he was not able to make it on time. As a result, he got timed out while still on the plane.
Border were bowled out for 172 and Free State in reply posted a huge total of 349. Drakes took two wickets for Pieter Strydom & Co. However, his side was sent packing for 136 in the second innings and lost the match by an innings and 41 runs.
