Hitting a century, double-century or triple-century is considered as a prestigious milestone for any batter irrespective of the format in consideration. However, the feat of amassing 300 runs in a single innings in Test remains a rare occurrence.
As of September 2, 2025, there have been only 33 triple-centuries scored in Test cricket. Don Bradman, Virender Sehwag, Chris Gayle and Brian Lara have scored two each. There was one particular instance when Bradman was left stranded on 299 after Australia were bowled out in their first innings in a Test in 1932 against South Africa.
However, the only batter to be dismissed on that score is New Zealand's Martin Crowe. The instance occurred in the first Test of the three-match series against Sri Lanka in Wellington in 1991. The match eventually ended as a draw, with Crowe securing the Player of the Match accolade for his superlative performance.
Speaking of the game, Rumesh Ratnayake (4/45 in 18.2 overs) and Graeme Labrooy (4/68 in 25 overs) shared eight wickets between them as New Zealand were bundled out for 174 in 58.2 overs in the first inninfs. Crowe emerged as the highest run-scorer with 30 off 71 while wicketkeeper-batter Ian Smith contributed with a run-a-ball 28 in what was a severely underwhelming batting performance by the Kiwis.
In response, Sri Lanka piled up 497 runs on the back of Aravinda de Silva's marathon 267 off 380, his highest Test score and maiden double century. The new-ball pair of Danny Morrison (5/153 in 44 overs) and Willie Watson (4/121 in 46.1 overs) put in an impressive shift.

Trailing by 300-plus runs, it was expected to be an uphill contest for the hosts to stay afloat in the contest. However, Crowe had other plans. He arrived at the crease after the fall of John Wright (88 off 168) and combined superbly with Andrew Jones (186 off 454) to put on runs. Jones fell 14 short of his double century while Crowe's 610-minute-long innings came to an end after he was caught behind on 299 off 523 with three more balls remaining on the fifth day's play.
