In the IPL, the Mumbai Indians (MI) are the joint most successful franchise with five titles to their name. While their on-field performances under Rohit Sharma’s leadership have been exceptional, much of MI’s success comes from their strategic approach in IPL auctions and the year-long scouting.
From giving hidden gems a platform to perform, the Mumbai Indians have made a model of success that other franchises strive to match. The franchise’s auction strategy has always been around balance and trust in their scouting process.
Unlike teams that often overspend on marquee players, MI’s strategy has been to invest wisely and build depth. Their scouts, including John Wright and Rahul Sanghvi, have consistently brought talents such as Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, and Ishan Kishan, all of whom went on to become match-winners.
However, there have been exceptions where Mumbai went big at the auction. Despite the hype, some signings did not bring back the expected returns. Between 2017 and 2020, the Mumbai Indians enjoyed their most dominant phase, winning three titles in four years. Leadership has been another reason for Mumbai’s success. Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, along with the management encouraging player freedom, has created a confident environment. MI has thrived under this culture. However, now that the captaincy baton has moved to Hardik Pandya, the team is looking to take their celebrated legacy to new heights.
