Rating Bowling of Super 12 teams in Week 1

The Super 12 fixtures commenced from the 22nd October and up until now (29th October), it appears as though we have witnessed it all! The Drama, suspense, last ball thrillers, the ‘upsets’, rain gods making their presence felt and what not?
Moreover, teams have completed about two to three fixtures as of the first week in the showpiece event and the race for semi-final spot is wide open and heating up as the matches come thick and fast. The Australian tracks are more bowling friendly thus assisting them with bounce and decent pace. Teams have taken these conditions to their advantage and have fired all cylinders to get results favouring their side. Let us see how the sides have fared in the group stages in Week 1, as we have rated teams based on their bowling display.

<h2>Rating Bowling of Super 12 teams in Week 1</h2>
<h3>12. Netherlands- 3/10</h3>

The Dutch side relished magnificent outings in the First Round fixtures as one of their strong areas was the bowling. The side was successful in restricted the rival teams to a low score, thanks to the terrific bowling display by the line-up. It is one thing to perform exceedingly well in the First Round but to maintain that rhythm in the group stage with heavyweight teams is a whole different ball game altogether. Such is the case with this Netherlands side in the competition.
The Netherlands looked like a side hungry and ready to give the rival teams a run for their money. However, it appears that, the hunger has not translated well on the pitch against the heavyweight sides. Since their first Super 12 match, the side has played two fixtures against Bangladesh and team India. The bowling against the Bangla Tigers was still competitive with Bas de Leede, their main wicket taker since their First Round outings helped scalp two wickets along with Paul van Meekeren.
Moreover, the rest of the line up too did not leak too many runs, but the side just did not play like how they maintained themselves in the qualifying rounds. Against India, the bowling was completely exposed as the Men in Blue battered the Dutch side for 179 runs. Four of their six regular bowlers ensured an economy rate of 8.00 whereas Bas de Leede and Logan van Beek had an economy of over 11.00, leaking the most runs in the match.
<h3>11. Ireland- 5/10</h3>

The Irish side endured a dismal outing with the ball against the Asia Cup 2022 winners, Sri Lanka in their first fixture of the Super 12. Ireland were only able to pick up a single Lankan wicket and were beaten in 15 overs suffering a major loss even in terms of net run rate.
Spinner Gareth Delany was the only bowler who managed to pick up a wicket under his name in the match against the Sri Lankan side. As the side moved to their next fixture against England, it was expected that the English batters would take matters in their own hands and provide a good beating.
However, in an interesting turn of events, the Irish side took wickets in quick time that swiftly put England in the backfoot. Joshua Little completely outplayed the batters with his sensational pace and used the pitch conditions to his advantage. Eventually as it began showering in the venue, Duckworth Lewis came into play and Ireland were handed a victory.
<h3>10. Bangladesh- 5/10</h3>

Taskin Ahmed, the man in form for the side, scalped an incredible four-fer against the Netherlands as the Bangla Tigers just narrowly won the match by nine runs. &nbsp;Keeping aside the one over from Mosaddek Hossain that was slammed for 14 runs, the overall performance was decent with the likes of Mustafizur Rahman giving away mere 20 runs in his four over and skipper Shakib Al Hasan picking up a wicket under his belt with an economy rate of 8.00.
Up next was the fixture against the Proteas, South Africa. The Bangla Tigers produced a rather disorganized bowling against the rival side as they got smacked for a mammoth 205 runs in their full quota of 20 overs. Rahman’s four over was the only over the Proteans were unable to target whole heartedly. From star bowler Taskin to Afif Hossain, nearly everyone had an economy rate of over 9.00.
The shambolic display on the pitch with the ball has completely rattled the Bangladeshi side following the battering they took against the African side. The side will need to gear up as they have had two contrasting outings with the ball in their two games and their forthcoming matches will set the tone for the rest of the tournament.
<h3>9. Zimbabwe- 6/10</h3>

The Zimbabweans are riding high on their success following the historic win against Babar Azam’s Pakistan in their previous fixture. Defending a low total of 130 in the Australian tracks is not everyone’s cup of tea but this African nation completely outplayed a dominant Pakistan side.
All-rounder Sikandar Raza was their star performer who guided the side to a massive win against the heavyweights in the match. Three wickets is what came from his name having given away only 25 runs in his four overs. Combined vital performances from Blessing Muzarabani, Brad Evans, and Luke Jongwe gave the side a ray of hope that they could earn the three points and cause an upset to the Men in Green.
However, in their first fixture against South Africa, just prior to the rains, Zimbabwe’s skipper Craig Ervine, handed the ball to three bowlers. Tendai Chatara, Raza, and Richard Ngarava were all thrashed by opener Quinton de Kock who did not show any mercy. However, as the rain announced its arrival, Zimbabwe were lucky to squeeze out a point from the match.
<h3>8. Afghanistan- 6/10</h3>

Star bowler Rashid Khan and Mujeeb ur Rahman were touted to be the best performers for the side despite the Australian conditions not suiting spinners. However, the duo took England by storm in their very first outing in the Super 12. They registered two wickets between them with an economy under 6.00 each which goes onto show that the duo was well efficient for the side.
Fareed Ahmad on the contrary gave away 23 runs off only two overs that proved to be the costliest for the side despite picking a wicket against England. Skipper Mohammad Nabi has been putting good use of his experience well in the conditions with his flight and slower balls that has come in handy for the all-rounder.
However, still not much can be deciphered as they have played only one of their three matches with the last two games getting abandoned due to rain. The side is still yet to play hosts and defending champions Australia. That is the moment when the side will be pushed to its fullest potential, and it will be interesting to see if they can put up a fight against the Aussies.
<h3>7. Pakistan- 6/10</h3>

One of the sides who have a very solid bowling line-up on paper is Babar Azam-led Pakistan. When you have exceptional bowlers such as Haris Rauf and Shaheen Shah Afridi, the young exuberance of pacer Naseem Shah coupled with decent players with the ball such as Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz, one only wonders what could possibly go wrong?
Yet everything seems to have gone wrong for this side from - bowling, management, decisions made by the captain in the bowling innings and so on. Afridi came back from an injury, and it was expected that he would be at his best to compete the charts for the highest wicket taker. However, the player has not even managed to a single wicket next to his name rather has been slammed by fans for leaking too many runs for a player of his calibre.
Mohammad Nawaz was criticized for his performance against India for which the skipper decided to replace him with Mohammad Wasim, who immediately instilled confidence by picking four wickets against Zimbabwe. Haris Rauf too has been exceptional and the man who has been the difference for the side in the pace department. However, on occasions, he too has got smacked off the park by his rival counterparts. Consistency is something that appears to be missing in the squad and they will have to fix this swiftly if they still want to keep their last four hopes alive.
<h3>6. Sri Lanka- 7/10</h3>

The Asia Cup 2022 winners have a few players who have been performing consistently well for the side and have been deemed as bankable. However, the side has also endured a few injury upsets right from the beginning of the tournament.
Since their first match against Ireland, the side projected a solid bowling unit with Maheesh Theekshana and Hasaranga leading from the front and scalping wickets after wickets. Binura Fernando, Lahiru Kumara, Chamika Karunaratne, have all relished fine outings for the side with fantastic economy rates.
However, in their clash against Australia, some of the bowlers were just not able to match the brute power of the Aussie batters. This included their star bowler Hasaranga getting slammed for as much as 53 in only three overs and picking up no wickets under his belt. Keeping aside the Australian conditions, the bowlers have been rather decent as compared with the other teams in the tournament.&nbsp;

<h3>5. South Africa- 7/10</h3>

Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi were regarded as the pace speedsters who would hand the side major breakthroughs in the games. However, the duo ended up leaking 40 runs between them in only four over with an economy rate of 10.00, however, Ngidi eventually made up for it by taking two wickets. Rabada on the contrary ran out of luck as he was not able to scalp any against Zimbabwe.
However, it was the following match against Bangladesh that Rabada returned to headlines along with Anrich Nortje and Tabraiz Shamsi for picking crucial wickets. Shamsi and Nortje picked a whopper seven wickets between them that completely bamboozled the Bangla innings and toppled them for just 101 in the chase for 205.
While the bowlers seem to pick up momentum, the performances in the last week have been well but a lot more is expected by the side. The forthcoming weeks are crucial for the last four spots and the bowlers will need shift gears.&nbsp;

<h3>4. Australia- 6/10</h3>

Like Pakistan, hosts and defending champions Australia have solid line up filled with brute pace. Mitchell Starc, the leader of the pack, was dispatched for a couple of maximums in his four over, giving away 36 runs against New Zealand.
However, it was not just him, the others in the line-up were just as poor as Starc. Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins together gave away 87 runs in their four overs that proved to be a very costly affair for the side in terms of net run rate later on.
The underwhelming performance with the ball continued against Sri Lanka when the side were strong in the initial couple of overs. However subsequently, the Lankan batters decided to attack a few bowlers and set up a competitive total. The Australians will need to get back to the drawing boards and figure out a way to use their conditions to their advantage in the forthcoming fixtures.&nbsp;

England in their first fixture of the Super 12 played against Afghanistan in a low scoring contest between the two. Moreover, the night was memorable for Sam Curran as he picked up a fifer and giving away mere 10 runs in his 3.4 overs.
There were some brilliant performances by Mark Wood, Chris Woakes and Ben Stokes in the very same fixture as they picked five wickets between them. In the Ireland match, Curran was unable to match up with his previous performance and ended up giving away 31 runs off his three overs despite the two wickets to his name.
Adding to this, Woakes too was costly along with Mark Wood displaying inconsistency in the following match. The side were gearing up to play Australia in their third fixture and get better with the ball, however, rain abandoned the match thus giving each side, a point.&nbsp;

India began their first couple of overs just as they had hoped for and practices in the training sessions. However, the Pakistani batters in the same match had to step up and began firing that helped them achieve a competitive total.
Axar Patel in his one over was blasted for 21 runs that handed the rival side a major boost. Hardik Pandya, Ashwin and Arshdeep Singh too proved to be slightly costly towards the conclusion of the match with an economy of over 7.50 maintained by the three.
However, the following match against the Netherlands, death over specialists Arshdeep Singh and Mohammed Shami picked up three wickets together with an economy of 9.25 and 6.75 respectively. Ashwin, Axar Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar too picked up two wickets each.&nbsp;
