We're back for the second set
The second set is underway after a short break: And Capped All-Rounders will be going under the hammer in this set. The first player - Gus Atkinson is UNSOLD.
Will any player be unsold surprisingly?
ICYMI
Cameron Green will be earning only INR 18 crore, despite bagging a massive INR 25.20 crore signing from KKR. This comes into effect because of the maximum fee rule put in place by the IPL committee, wherein any overseas player cannot earn more than the maximum retaining fee paid to players in the 2025 season. This will be saving the teams from exploiting the supply-demand imbalance, marking a historic decision in the tournament's history.
According to a note forwarded by the IPL to all of its franchises, the rule reads,
"Any overseas player's auction fee at small auction will be lower than the highest retention price [of INR 18 crore] and the highest auction price at the big auction. In case the highest auction price at the big auction is INR 20 crore, then INR 18 crore will be the cap. If the highest auction price at big auction is INR 16 crore, then the cap will be INR 16 crore."
So, in Green's case, the additional 7.2 crore from his signing will be spent by the BCCI towards players' welfare, ensuring a wholesome growth across.
Sarfaraz ke saath dhokha!!!
Sarfaraz Khan smashed a 22-ball 73 at today's SMAT game for Mumbai. But that hasn't helped him change his fate so far. The first set is over, and only a couple of players were sold.
IPL 2026 mini auction overview
The IPL 2026 mini auction is set to play an important role in guiding team strategies ahead of the new season. Unlike a mega auction, this one is about fine-tuning squads rather than rebuilding them from scratch. The auction will be held on December 16 at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, starting at 2:30 PM IST. This will be the third consecutive IPL auction hosted outside India, following Dubai in 2024 and Jeddah in 2025.
Player pool and available slots
A total of 359 players have been shortlisted for the auction pool, comprising 246 Indians and 113 overseas players. The ten franchises will compete to fill a maximum of 77 slots, including 31 overseas spots. As per IPL rules, squads can have up to 25 players, with a maximum of eight overseas cricketers.
All teams together have INR 237.55 crore left to spend. Kolkata Knight Riders are the busiest side with 13 slots available and the biggest purse of INR 64.30 crore. Chennai Super Kings with INR 43.40 crore and Sunrisers Hyderabad, with 25.50 crore.
The player pool is spread across 42 auction sets, divided by role and capped and uncapped categories. There is no marquee set in a mini auction. The maximum base price is INR 2 crore, while the minimum is INR 30 lakh. Big names in the top bracket include Cameron Green, Steve Smith, Wanindu Hasaranga, David Miller, Jonny Bairstow, and Wanindu Hasaranga.
