Due to two different violations of the Pakistan Cricket Board's anti-corruption code, Asif Afridi has been suspended for two years. The left-arm spinner's suspension will come in to effect from the date the player was temporarily suspended which is September 12, 2022. According to reports, the offences took place in the 2022 Pakistan Cup, where Afridi, represented runners-up Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
PCB chairman Najam Sethi taking about the incident said, "It gives the PCB no joy to suspend an international cricketer for two years, but we have a zero-tolerance approach towards such offences. As the game's governing body, we need to make examples, handle such matters robustly and send out strong messages to all cricketers."
He further said, "It is bitter fact that corruption poses a threat to our sport as selfish corrupters lure cricketers in different ways and methods. That's precisely why the PCB has been investing heavily on player education so that they remain vigilant and can help the PCB eradicate this menace by reporting approaches. If, despite all our best efforts to create awareness, a player falls victim to his greed, then the PCB has no sympathy."
Asif hasn't played for Pakistan's national team, but he was included in the T20I and ODI squads for Australia's tour to Pakistan in 2022. He has also featured in the PSL with Multan Sultans. The left-arm spinner has featured in 35 first-class, 42 List-A and 65 T20 games, having picked up 240 wickets overall. In August 2022, during the National T20 Cup, he played his last cricket game against Central Punjab before the ban was imposed.
