Australian left-arm seamer Mitchell Starc announced himself in the World Cup as he claimed a hat-trick during warm-up fixture against the Netherlands on Saturday, September 30 at Greenfield International Stadium, Thiruvananthapuram. Defending a total of 166/7 in the rain-curtailed 23-over game, Starc struck in the very first over as he trapped the Netherlands’ opener Max O’Dowd in front of the stumps on the fifth ball.
He further breached the defence of Wesley Barresi on the very next ball to send him on his way back to the pavilion for a golden duck. In the second over, he dismantled the stumps of Bas de Leede on the very first ball to complete a hat-trick.
Courtesy of the early onslaught by Starc, Netherlands were left reeling at 12/3 after 2.1 overs and were further reduced to 15/4 after 3.5 overs. Notably, the Australian fast bowler is seen at his menacing best in the World Cups as he first finished as the joint-highest wicket-taker of the 2015 edition with 22 wickets to his name from eight innings at an average of 10.18 and an economy of 3.50.

The 33-year-old further finished as the leading wicket-taker of the 2019 edition as well scalping a record 27 wickets from ten innings at an average of 18.59 and an economy of 5.43. Notably, his 27 wickets are also a record for most wickets taken in a single edition of the World Cup as he surpassed the legendary Glenn McGrath who had picked 26 wickets in the 2007 edition.

In the four matches played this year, Starc has picked nine wickets and is eager to have another sensational World Cup edition. He currently ranks on the fifth spot in the list of all-time wicket-takers in World Cup history having 49 wickets from 18 matches.
Starc is 22 wickets behind levelling McGrath’s record of 71 wickets in a World Cup career and will be desperate to rise to the top spot in the upcoming edition.
