India managed to square the five-match series against England by winning the final Test at The Oval in London this week by six runs. Not many experts gave Shubman Gill-led India a chance heading into the series. The Asian giants were missing the services of veterans like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who retired from the longest format ahead of the series. Mohammed Shami wasn't picked as the selectors were concerned about his fitness. However, the young side fought fire with fire and drew the series.
Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria lauded the Indian fans for their unwavering support of the team through thick and thin. He also lauded Shubman for leading the team from the front. Kaneria also mentioned the decision not to take the new ball on the final morning of the Test match. Mohammed Siraj bagged a five-for to give India a thrilling victory.
"Hats off to the crowd, they made it feel like the game was being played in India. Shubman Gill did a great captaincy throughout the tour and his tactical brilliance on the final day helped India a lot. His decision to continue with the old bowl hugely benefited India. This series was important for Shubman Gill as it was his first series as a captain. Drawing a series overseas with a young team is a big motivation for him. He will learn a lot of things in the future, and there will always be ifs and buts but I think he can be a fantastic captain in a long run. He absorbed the pressure brilliantly, and it is a good start of his captaincy career," Kaneria told IANS.
