After a comprehensive win in the first ODI, India (IND) will look to bag the series when they lock horns with South Africa (SA) in the second game at St George's Park, Gqeberha, on Tuesday, December 19. The Proteas, however, would like to consider the crushing defeat as an aberration and bounce back strongly.
After the T20I series ended stalemate, the first ODI was expected to be a cracker of a contest. However, the fans who were expecting a riveting affair witnessed a game that ended in under 45 overs. Aiden Markram won the toss and opted to bat first at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. However, the Indian pace-bowling pair of Arshdeep Singh and Avesh Khan wreaked havoc in favourable conditions to bundle out South Africa for just 116. In reply, fifties for Sai Sudharsan and Shreyas Iyer ensured a thumping eight-wicket win for the KL Rahul-led side.
As the action shifts to Gqeberha, it is important to take note of the weather forecast as the second T20I which was played at this venue last week was a rain-curtailed affair. According to AccuWeather, there is about a 60% chance of rain in the morning. However, it reduces to 20% around the starting time of the match. During the evening, the conditions are expected to get better.
St George's Park, Gqeberha Pitch Report
The pitch for the second T20I was a belter at St George's Park. India scored 180/7 in that game on the back of swashbuckling half-centuries from Suryakumar Yadav and Rinku Singh. After a rain break, the home side were given a DLS target of 152 runs in 15 overs, which they chased down with five wickets and seven balls to spare.
So far, 42 ODIs have been played in Gqeberha and while 21 matches have been won by chasing teams, 20 have been won batting first. The average first-innings score at the venue is 233. The pitch is expected to be a balanced one with something in it for both the batters as well as the bowlers.
