With security concerns intensifying following cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan, IPL (Indian Premier League) chairman Arun Dhumal has stated that the tournament will continue as scheduled unless the Indian government instructs otherwise.
The 2025 edition of the IPL has faced an unprecedented challenge after border tensions between India and Pakistan led to the midway abandonment of the fixture between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals at Dharamsala's HPCA Stadium on May 8. However, Dhumal has confirmed that the league will proceed for now, with decisions subject to future government advisories.
"We are reviewing the situation right now. It is an evolving situation. We haven't received any directive from the government. Obviously, the decision will be taken keeping all the logistics in mind," Dhumal was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.
The evening in Dharamsala, where the Punjab Kings vs Delhi Capitals match was called off during the 11th over, was initially described believed to be abandoned due to a significant technical failure at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium. Three floodlight towers went off, forcing an evacuation of players and nearly 80% of a 23,000-strong crowd due to power outages and increasing military activity in nearby regions.

Meanwhile, the BCCI has arranged a special train to evacuate both teams and match officials to Delhi via Pathankot, as air travel in the region has been suspended. Punjab Kings' next scheduled match against Mumbai Indians has also been shifted from Dharamsala to Ahmedabad for safety concerns.
IPL 2025 has so far witnessed 58 matches, with 12 league games and the playoffs still to be played across venues including Lucknow, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Jaipur, Kolkata, and Hyderabad. Notably, Dhumal confirmed that Friday’s match between Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Ekana cricket stadium will continue as scheduled.
"Yes, it is on as of now, but obviously it is an evolving situation and any decision will be taken keeping the best interest of all stakeholders in mind," he added.
Furthermore, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia explained the decision to call off the match, and the board has been closely monitoring the ongoing situation. He revealed that the safety of the players, officials, and fans is the top priority and further steps will be taken keeping the same in mind.
"The situation is not stable at the moment, and that is why we have cancelled today’s match — not just in Dharamsala, but also due to escalating tensions from the neighbouring country. The safety of players, spectators, and support staff is our top priority. We will do everything that is in the best interest of the nations involved. We are closely monitoring the situation and will make further decisions accordingly," he said.
