The Indian Premier League (IPL) started in 2008 and caught the attention of the cricket fraternity in no time. In the last 15 years, the league has had its odd low points but they have been emphatically overshadowed by the highs.
Last year, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) signed a mind-boggling media deal of USD 6.2 billion (approx Rs 48000 crore) for a five-year period for the IPL. It is important to note that the IPL is the second-on the list of most high-valued leagues, in the world, after the National Football League (NFL). The NFL struck a USD 110 billion media deal for an 11-year period, starting from 2022.
According to Dhumal, the media rights value of the IPL could see a sharp increase in the coming years if it can continue to engage the audience with time-to-time innovations to enhance the product. He also reckoned that the inclusion of cricket in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the beginning of the Women's Premier League (WPL) will only help the sport to go from strength to strength.
"If I have to see how it has gone over the last 15 years and if I have to go by estimates going forward, we are expecting media rights (of the IPL) to go somewhere close to USD 50 billion by around 2043," said Dhumal as quoted by Business Insider.
"We need to keep innovating, keep doing better in terms of fan engagement, and keep making it better in terms of the quality of games. Now that cricket is becoming part of the Olympics and with the WPL taking it to a different level for women's cricket, I see a lot of hope and light at the end of the tunnel," he added.
IPL is the best Make in India brand post-Independence: Arun Dhumal
The media rights value of the IPL has seen splendid growth since its inception. What started with INR 6000 crore in 2008 has risen exponentially over the last 15 years and surpassed the media rights value of several renowned leagues around the world. The former BCCI treasurer explained the impact of the IPL and why it has managed to strike a chord with cricket enthusiasts across the globe.
"IPL is the most-watched cricket league in the world. Personally, I feel IPL is the best Make in India brand we can think of post-Independence. We are a very diverse country in terms of states, cultures and languages being spoken. But this is one platform (IPL) which is rooted so well that you are able to showcase India to the globe," Dhumal said.
