‘It was a very terrifying experience’ – England’s Danni Wyatt opens up on Cape Town cable car incident

England cricketer Danielle Wyatt has opened up on a horrific incident she experienced when her England teammates and Danni went for a trip to Cape Town. She remembered the ‘terrifying’ moment when Cape Town’s famed Table Mountain cable car lost power and left her hovering high above the ground. The ride sweeps over 1,000m up to the plateau above the city.

Wyatt, who is in the country is now taking part in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. She said that the ride made her nervous and will not go to the mountain anytime soon. 

“There were a few technical issues that made me very nervous before we boarded the cable car and then it decided to drop a little bit and swung,” Wyatt said as quoted by sacricketmag.com. 

“It was a very terrifying experience. I don’t think I’ll be going up that mountain again anytime soon,” she added.

The 31-year-old batter said that the incident happened because the system lost power due to load-shedding. She added that if she goes to the same place by chance, she will choose the stairs.

“I’m not going on that cable car ever again. It’s the load-shedding, once the electricity goes, that’s it. Next time, I’ll take the stairs,” the cricketer said.

The cable car officially known as Table Mountain Aerial Cableway was opened in 1929 and carries around 900,000 people a year. The authorities revealed the reason that made the tourists in trouble, stating that a hydraulic system, which kicks into action during load-shedding, had suffered a technical fault.

“What happened is not what we aim for. We sincerely regret the experience that passengers who were stuck in our cars. We are happy to confirm that all the passengers safely reached the upper and lower stations,” said managing director Wahida Parker.

Wyatt and her England teammates face South Africa in the Women’s T20 World Cup semi-finals at Newlands in Cape Town on Friday, February 24. The batter’s 59-run knock in the match against Pakistan helped her side, to score 213 in the group stage match of the tournament. She will now aim to continue that momentum in the semi-final clash against the Proteas.
