Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has shed light on why the selectors chose Kuldeep Yadav over Yuzvendra Chahal for the impending 2023 Asia Cup, scheduled from August 30 to September 17.
Gavaskar, now a renowned cricket commentator, offered a fresh perspective on the selection, as he cited Yadav's unique prowess as a left-arm wrist spinner, which adds a distinct dimension to the team, not to mention his handy batting skills. Speaking on the imperative of balanced team composition, Gavaskar emphasized that the combination of players plays a pivotal role.
"Well, clearly, if Sanju Samson had got more runs, then he would have been certainly in the team, so will Chahal. But sometimes you're looking at the balance of the team. Maybe, you can say that Kuldeep is a handy batter down the order, so maybe that's why he gets the nod ahead of Chahal. Also, he brings a left-hand variety," Gavaskar shared his insights with India Today.
The veteran cricketer's explanation echoed through his words as he highlighted the dual advantage Kuldeep's presence brings – both with the bat and as a left-arm spin option. For those less familiar with recent performances, Yadav has got an impressive tally of 34 wickets in 19 ODIs since 2022. In the same period, Chahal claimed 21 wickets in 16 games.
Meanwhile, Gavaskar also touched upon Samson's versatility, underlining his role as an all-rounder capable of keeping wickets. While analysing the selection, Gavaskar recognized the long-term potential of Samson.
"I do believe Sanju Samson is only 28, so you can't say this is gonna be his last World Cup. There is plenty of time for him to get into the Indian team," he said.
Gavaskar's recognition extended to Tilak Varma and he lauded the youngster for inclusion in Asia Cup squad. Varma, who was India's highest run-scorer during the T20I series in the West Indies, drew Gavaskar's praise despite a couple of initial hiccups in Ireland.
"Very good because the man has done enough in the matches that he's played, he's shown what he's capable of. Yes, against Ireland, a couple of failures don't matter," Gavaskar concluded.
