Former Australian pacer Jason Gillespie declined suggestions of coaching the Indian team, which has struggled of late in the red-ball format. Since Gautam Gambhir took charge as the head coach of the Indian team, the Men in Blue have been brilliant in white-ball cricket but ordinary in the Test arena.

Gillespie, who served as Pakistan's head coach in 2024, from April to December, recently said that he is not willing to coach the Indian contingent in the red-ball circuit. The former Australian pacer made this clear during an interaction with his fans on social media.

One of the users posted to Gillespie: "Jason, you need to coach India now because they are not just losing but getting whitewashed at home twice. They need you seriously."

To this, Gillespie replied: "No thanks."

India were whitewashed in a three-match Test series against South Africa at home in 2024. Last year, they were beaten 2-0 by New Zealand in another home Test series. Shubman Gill and Co. are currently ranked fourth in the ICC rankings for Test teams.

On the other hand, the Asian giants are stranded at No. 6 in the World Test Championship (WTC) standings for the 2025-2027 cycle. They have four wins, four defeats, and one draw in their kitty after playing nine Tests. Their win percentage is a disappointing 48.15.

The Indian team will play three ODIs and five T20Is later this month against New Zealand. Then, they will compete in the T20 World Cup, which begins on February 7. India are expected to return to the longest format in August 2026 as they are scheduled to play two Tests in Sri Lanka.
