English skipper Harry Brook bailed his side out of a precarious situation to register his second ODI ton during the first match of the three-match series against New Zealand. Brook came in to bat when his side was in a dire situation at 5/3 in 2 overs. The situation further worsened when England got reduced to 10/4 in 5.1 overs.
Brook's first six out of the 11 he hit during his 135-run blitz came off the bowling of Zakary Foulkes on the fourth ball of the eighth over. By the time England got to their team hundred, Brook had already gone past fifty. Three back-to-back maximums off Jacob Duffy in the 32nd over of the innings brought up Brook's milestone in style.
The 26-year-old middle-order batter farmed the strike to end up putting on 57 off just 32 deliveries for the final wicket, before falling prey to his opposition counterpart, Mitchell Santner. His 101-ball stay at the crease comprised nine fours and 11 sixes as the visitors ended up getting bowled out for 223 in 35.2 overs. The crowd at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui gave a standing ovation to Brook as he walked off.
Speaking of how the first innings panned out, England were in all sorts of trouble after their top-order batters got out cheaply. Jamie Smith got out on the first ball of the match. The trio of Ben Duckett, Joe Root and Jacob Bethell all scored two runs each. The second-highest scorer for the tourists was Jamie Overton, who scored 46 off 54.
Foulkes and Duffy picked up four and three wickets each. Nathan Smith was the only New Zealander who went wicketless. He conceded 49 runs in his six overs. Skipper Mitchell Santner picked up one wicket in his 7.2 overs while conceding 22 runs.
