Who won New Zealand vs England 1st ODI today? — Match result & turning points
New Zealand began their ODI series against England with a convincing four-wicket win at Mount Maunganui on Sunday, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Chasing 224, the hosts reached the target in just 36.4 overs, thanks to Daryl Mitchell’s unbeaten 78 and Michael Bracewell’s 51. After being sent in to bat, England had a disastrous start, losing their top order within the first six overs. Zakary Foulkes, playing his second ODI, picked up four wickets.
By the 12th over, England's scorecard read 56/6, with only Harry Brook holding one end. The England captain played one of the finest knocks in recent ODI memory, smashing 135 off 101 balls with 9 fours and 11 sixes. His lone effort took England to a fighting total of 223, as he added 87 runs for the seventh wicket with Jamie Overton (46).
However, that total never looked enough on a good batting surface. England began well with the new ball as Brydon Carse took two wickets in one over to dismiss Will Young and Kane Williamson, while Luke Wood removed Rachin Ravindra soon after. But Daryl Mitchell revived the innings alongside Tom Latham first, and then built a match-winning 92-run partnership with Bracewell.
While Bracewell was run out after a 51, skipper Mitchell Santner added 27 off 25 balls with two sixes. Daryl dropped earlier on 43, ensured there were no issues, guiding his team home with an unbeaten 78. Carse finished with three wickets, while Wood and Rashid claimed one each for England. In the end, Brook’s brilliant century went in vain as New Zealand comfortably chased down the target with 80 balls remaining. The victory gave the Kiwis a lead in the series after a disappointing T20I leg.
Top batting performances of the match — Harry Brook
England skipper Harry Brook walked in at 4/2 and soon watched his team collapse to 56/6. However, Brook not only stabilized the innings but also dominated New Zealand’s bowlers, scoring 135 off just 101 balls, laced with 9 fours and 11 sixes. His knock took the team to a respectable 223. Brook reached his hundred with three consecutive sixes off Jacob Duffy and continued his onslaught until the end. Despite England’s defeat, Brook’s lone-handed effort scoring over 60% of his team’s runs earned him the Player of the Match award.
