The defending champions Gujarat Titans are having another incredible season in IPL 2023, as they are one step away from becoming the third team to win back-to-back titles in the T20 extravaganza. GT have been carried by their star batter Shubman Gill and a star bowling attack comprising Mohammed Shami, Rashid Khan and Mohit Sharma.
Gill, in particular, has been in exceptional form as he played another memorable knock scoring a hundred (129 off 60) against Mumbai Indians in the Eliminator. Following his innings, the GT opener got special praise from legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar who credited him for his hunger for runs and good running between the wicket.
Tendulkar took to Twitter and wrote, “Shubman Gill's performance this season has been nothing short of unforgettable, marked by two centuries that left an indelible impact. One century ignited @mipaltan's hopes, while the other dealt them a crushing blow. Such is the unpredictable nature of cricket! What truly impressed me about Shubman's batting was his remarkable temperament, unwavering calmness, hunger for runs and astute running between the wickets.”
Gill is enjoying a dream run in the tournament as he’s the IPL orange cap holder of the season with 851 runs to his name at an average of 60.78 and a strike rate of 156.43 with three hundreds and four fifties to his name. The 23-year-old is 122 runs behind Virat Kohli’s record tally of 973 runs in the 2016 season and will be eyeing another hundred in the final to surpass him in the final.
Ahead of the final, the legendary batter also said that both GT and CSK have great depth in batting, and it will be a battle between the two batting powerhouses of the tournament.
It could be a case of one team out-batting the other: Sachin Tendulkar
“Gujarat are a formidable side, and the wickets of @ShubmanGill, @hardikpandya7 & @DavidMillerSA12 will be key for Chennai tonight. @ChennaiIPL also bat deep with @msdhoni coming in as low as number 8, hence it could be a case of one team out-batting the other. It’s going to be an interesting Final to watch,” he added.
Notably, If GT manage to win the title they will become the third team to win back-to-back IPL titles and the first team to win two titles in their first two attempts. On the other hand, CSK are playing their tenth IPL final overall and will be eyeing their fifth IPL title and getting level with MI in terms of most IPL titles in their history.
