Finding a non-indigenous surname in a local register of records is a thing of the past, at least in the Australian cricketing fraternity. In what comes as a little surprising thing to hear, Singh, Patel, and Sharma are among the top surnames that have registered for pursuing the sport professionally, as per the latest data from Cricket Australia as studied.

The other most popular last names in the records as found are Smith and Williams, coming third and fifth on the list, respectively. If the reports are to be believed, the Australian body is committed to bring about inclusivity through multiple modes and pathways. The national cricketing organization also aims to empower the engagement within the community and negate the social differences based on cultures to nurture the talent on the basis of merits across all levels, starting from school cricket itself.

As per The Indian Sun, the participation of South Asian Australians has increased multifold in the national cricketing fraternity. CA had set a target of achieving one lakh South Asian player registrations by 2027. However, the same has been achieved in the 2024-25 season, a staggering two years ahead of the original targets under the comprehensive plan.

The target was part of the Cricket Australia’s Multicultural Action Plan, which aims to drive meaningful change across the sport by breaking down barriers, building trust, and fostering strong relationships. The plan has focused on building inclusive pathways, strengthening community engagement, and increasing visibility of multicultural talent across all levels of the game.
