Former Australian pacer Glenn McGrath reckoned that the ongoing Test at The Oval could be the last one in the longest format of the game for Australia’s star opener David Warner. He has been struggling with form, especially in Test matches since December last year, when he scored a double hundred in his 100th Test match. Whereas, in the ongoing Ashes 2023, in nine innings, he has only managed to score 225 runs.

Earlier, the 36-year-old stated that next year's Pakistan series would be his last Test outing. On this tour, Warner has struggled in front of the moving ball and has lost his wickets cheaply, especially against English pacer Stuart Broad who has dismissed him a total of 17 times in his career. McGrath believes that an impactful knock in the second innings of the last Ashes Test could only save Warner's red-ball career.

“There’s a bit of pressure on Dave Warner. He looked ok (in the first innings at the Oval), but then got out again. To be honest, I think, unfortunately, that maybe it’s coming towards the end of his career," said McGrath while Speaking on SENQ Breakfast.

However, in the English conditions, Warner's numbers don’t go well. In Test matches that he has played in England, the left-handed batter has never made a hundred and has averaged 32.31 compared to his average at home of over 58. The Aussie opener came into the series with an attacking mindset, but apart from one half-century, he has not been able to deliver.

“I know he came out the other day and said he wanted to play it to the end of next summer. But I think the pressure is on him, the vultures are circling. Unless he comes out in the second dig and produces a big score, I think he might struggle," McGrath further added.

Speaking of Ashes 2023, apart from Warner’s form, Pat Cummins-led Australia have done well in the series, as they are currently leading by 2-1. The Australian side has also been able to retain the series after avoiding a loss in the last game at Manchester. After the end of play on Day 1 at The Oval, England were dismissed for 283 runs in the first innings, while the visitors finished at 61/1 before resuming on Day 2.
