Sunrisers Hyderabad started well against Punjab Kings in the 14th match of the Indian Premier League 2023 (IPL) at Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Sunday (April 9). The veteran pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar dismissed Prabhsimran Singh on the very first delivery of the innings to give Hyderabad a good start while bowling first.
Then, South African pace all-rounder Marco Jansen, playing for the first time this season, took Matthew Short's valuable wicket in the second over to keep the pressure on. Jansen further shocked Punjab Kings with Jitesh Sharma's wicket in the fourth over to keep Sunrisers on track.
Meanwhile, Aiden Markram won the toss for Sunrisers Hyderabad and elected to field first with two changes to their playing eleven as Jansen replaced English spinner Adil Rashid while Mayank Markande came in for Abdul Samad.
Punjab Kings made one change to their winning combination, with Short coming in for Sri Lankan wicketkeeper-batter Bhanuka Rajapaksa. Nathan Ellis started ahead of South African star Kagiso Rabada after taking four wickets against Rajasthan Royals. However, Rabada is expected to come in as an Impact Player in the second innings as Punjab Kings named only three overseas players in their playing eleven.
Coming into the game, Bhuvneshawar's in-swing delivery landed on Prabhsimran's pads and the umpire was quick to raise his finger. The youngster consulted with Dhawan about taking a DRS review but the latter seemed in agreement with the umpire's decision.
Short, who won the Player of the Tournament award in the Big Bash League 2023, was expected to make a big impact on his IPL debut. But Jansen replicated Bhuvneshwar's wicket-taking delivery to dismiss the Australian in similar fashion in the second over. Jitesh was sent at No. 4 position and Jansen got his man in the fourth over to bag his second wicket of the evening and keep Hyderabad in a dominant position.
