Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan is always an entertainer with the bat, with his unorthodox strokeplay ensuring there is never a dull moment. During the Asia Cup 2025 clash against Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi on September 18, he produced yet another unusual moment.
In the 18th over of Afghanistan’s innings, pacer Nuwan Thushara bowled a brilliant slower yorker that completely deceived Rashid. The right-hander, attempting a slog sweep far too early, ended up deflecting the ball off his back thigh onto the stumps.
What followed was a comical episode. As soon as the ball hit the stumps, Thushara turned to appeal for LBW, not realising he had already bowled Rashid. At the same time, Rashid, equally unaware, signalled to review the decision, thinking the umpire had signaled him out leg-before. In reality, the umpire was merely pointing to Thushara indicating that the batter had been clean bowled as the ball hit the stumps and dislodged the bails.

It was one of those rare cases where both the batter and bowler appealed for what turned out to be a bowled dismissal. Once Thushara and Rashid saw the LED stumps light up, they both smiled, as did the other Sri Lankan players and the two on-field umpires.
Rashid had survived a close LBW shout in the previous over against Dushmantha Chameera, with DRS detecting an inside edge to save the Afghanistan captain. He perished three balls later.
Once Rashid departed, Nabi took it upon himself to ensure a phenomenal finish to the innings. The last two overs went for 49 runs, with the final over going for 32 runs, including five sixes in a row.
