Kolkata Knight Riders continued their dominant start to IPL 2024 with a huge win over Delhi Capitals. This puts the two time IPL winners at the top of the table with 6 points from three games. The biggest reason behind KKR’s dominance in the early part of the season is down to Sunil Narine.
The West Indies all-rounder scored a career-best 85 during the game against Delhi Capitals on Wednesday. The star cricketer scored his 15th T20 fifty and fifth half-century in the league's history during the game on Wednesday, April 03. So far, Narine has scored a total of 134 runs and picked sent three batters packing with the ball in hand.
Ever since his debut, the Trinidadian has been a vital cog in the KKR setup. His loyalty towards the Knight Riders' franchise is second to none. Moreover, with the arrival of Gautam Gambhir as the team's mentor, the second coming of the spin bowling all-rounder has been nothing short of fantastic.
What is Sunil Narine’s IPL salary?
As of IPL 2024, Sunil Narine earns INR 6 crore, as the Caribbean all-rounder had to take a pay-cut to stay with KKR. Interestingly, ahead of the 2022 mega auctions, the cricketer's salary was halved by the team management, retaining him for the aforementioned price as one of the overseas player alongside fellow Windies all-rounder Andre Russell.
The 35-year-old has seen his batting form dwindle since for the past five seasons or so. With 134 runs from 3 matches, this is already Narine’s best showing in five seasons of IPL. With the ball, the Arima-born has also seen his form pick after five seasons of inconsistent showing.
Shreyas Iyer, Chandrakant Pandit, and Gautam Gambhir will be delighted with the showing by the veteran star. Last year, the onus and pressure of opening the batting fell on Rahmanullah Gurbaz. In 2024 though, the pair of Sunil Narine and Phil Salt have evoked memories of the old pairing of the former and Chris Lynn.
The next game for KKR is against Chennai Super Kings as they return to their favourite Eden Gardens. It is said to be a frenetic few weeks of cricket, and the two-time champions have given themselves a huge headstart. If Narine can keep his form going, the coveted IPL trophy very well may be on its way to Kolkata after a decade.
