Defending champions Australia bounced back from their defeat against New Zealand as they registered a comfortable seven-wicket victory over Asia Cup winners Sri Lanka in Match 19 of the T20 World Cup 2022 in Perth. Marcus Stoinis stole the limelight with his 17-ball half-century, the fastest by an Australian in the format. He smashed 59* off just 18 with four fours and six towering maximums while chasing a 158-run target.

Talking about how the match unfolded, skipper Aaron Finch won the toss and opted to field first. Returning from injury, opener Pathum Nissanka top-scored for his side with his knock of 40 off 45. Dhananjaya de Silva made 26 off 23 while Charith Asalanka remained not out on 38 off 25 to take the Lankan Lions to a total of 157/6 in 20 overs. Mitchell Starc was the pick of the Aussie bowlers for his spell of 1/23 in four overs.

In reply, David Warner managed to score only 11 while Mitchell Marsh, who looked in a hurry, fell for a run-a-ball 17. Glenn Maxwell played a cameo of 23 off 12 with two fours and as many maximums before holing out to substitute Ashen Bandara at the boundary. The Stoinis show then began as the powerful batter clobbered the Lankan bowlers all around the park. Wanindu Hasaranga had an off day as he went for 53 runs for no wickets in his three-over spell.

In the process, Stoinis also hammered the joint-second fifty in the history of the competition. Finch struggled to get going for his innings of 31 off 42 but remained not out right till the end with Stoinis. Both scripted a convincing victory for the Kangaroos to open their account in the tournament. For his game-changing blitzkrieg, Stoinis grabbed the Player of the Match award.
