Zakir Hasan smashed a century on his debut and shared a 124-run opening partnership with Najmul Hossain Shanto in their pursuit of 513 against India in Chattogram. Zakir scored a magnificent 100 in his maiden Test appearance while Shanto amassed 67. The home side found themselves on 272/6 at stumps with veteran Shakib Al Hasan remaining not out on 40.

Resuming at 42/0, Shanto and Zakir registered the first-century opening partnership for Bangladesh against India in Tests. Pacer Umesh Yadav got the breakthrough when he dismissed the former while debutant Zakir fell prey to spinner R Ashwin. Yasir Ali and Litton Das failed to contribute much as they got dismissed for five and 19 respectively.

Mushfiqur Rahim lost his wicket to Axar Patel for 23 while Nurul Hasan also became the victim of the spinner for just three. Skipper Shakib stood firm as he remained unbeaten on 40 off 69 with three fours and two maximums. The hosts are 241 runs away from the target while the visitors need just four wickets to go 1-0 up. Spinner Axar was the pick of the Indian bowlers on the day for his spell of 3/50 in 27 overs which included ten maidens.

Meanwhile, here are some of the important stats and numbers from Day 4 of the 1st Test between Bangladesh and India:

4 – Zakir Hasan became the fourth Bangladeshi batter to smash a century (100) on debut. The other three players are Aminul Haque (145) against India in 2000, Mohammad Ashraful (114) against Sri Lanka in 2001, and Abul Hasan (113) against West Indies in 2012.

124 – Najmul Hossain Shanto and Zakir registered the highest opening partnership for Bangladesh against India in Tests. Previously, Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes shared a 53-run stand in the year 2010.

2 – Shanto and Zakir became the second pair to register a century-opening partnership (124) for Bangladesh in the fourth innings of a Test. Javed Omar and Nafees Iqbal shared a 133-run stand against Zimbabwe in Dhaka in 2005.

15 – Zakir became the 15th player overall to smash a hundred against India on Test debut.

43 – Axar Patel equaled R Ashwin at the top for picking up the most Test wickets (43) for India after appearing in the first seven matches.

7 – Zakir also became the seventh Bangladeshi to hit a ton in the fourth innings. The other six batters are Nafees against Zimbabwe in 2005, Mohammad Ashraful against Sri Lanka in 2008, Mushfiqur Rahim against India in 2010, Shakib Al Hasan against New Zealand in 2010, Junaid Siddique against England in 2010, and Mominul Haque against Sri Lanka in 2014.

293 – Virat Kohli has now taken the seventh-most catches as a fielder (293) in international cricket. He went past Graeme Smith’s tally of 292 grabs. The top six places are occupied by Mahela Jayawardene (440), Ricky Ponting (364), Ross Taylor (351), Jacques Kallis (338), Rahul Dravid (334), and Stephen Fleming (306).
