The sixteenth edition of the IPL 2023 is set to kick off on March 31, 2023, with the defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) taking on four-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the opener at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. After three long years, the Indian Premier League will have a home-and-away format yet again. For the first time in the history of IPL, no-balls, and wide calls made by on-field umpires can be challenged by the players.
Now, regarding today's clash, it will not be wrong to claim that both Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Gujarat Titans (GT) have a knack to prove cricket pandits wrong. Both have defied all the odds to reign supreme when it mattered the most. Interestingly enough, Out of the eight games to be played by the Super Kings, their first five encounters will be away from home. Now factoring this, last year CSK had the second-worst economy rate in the death stages averaging 11.29. Moreover, they are yet to find the solution to death woes.

When it comes to GT, they seemed to have found their remedy for this season. Last year, they missed a reliable anchor-role batter, albeit, they did try with B Sai Sudharsan and Vijay Shankar to fill that void but in vain. In an interesting move ahead, the Titans have sought after Kane Williamson to play that vital role for the team. Owing to his elbow injury, the flamboyant Kiwi is in much shape and form with the bat of late.
Consequently, skipper Hardik Pandya can allow himself to bat lower down the order to provide finishing touches and quickfire runs if needed. As for bowling, CSK will have use Santner and Conway wisely to fill up for Lankan cricketers who are to join a little late this season. While GT have bolstered their bowling arsenal with additions in the form of Shivam Mavi and the debutant Irish, Josh Little.
