Splendid centuries from Abdullah Shafique and Mohammad Rizwan helped Pakistan chase a massive total of 345 in the 8th match of the ICC ODI World Cup against Sri Lanka despite a sublime batting display from the duo of Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarwickrama
Speaking about the game, Sri Lanka have won the toss and opted to bat first. They lost Kusal Perera early on for a duck as Hasan Ali drew the first blood for Pakistan. Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka added a century stand for the second wicket Pathum Nissanka got to his fifty before getting dismissed by Shadab Khan.
Then Sadeera Samarawickrama joined hands with Kusal Mendis as they both added 111 runs for the third wicket. Kusal Mendis amassed 122 runs while Samarawickrama scored 108. Samarawickrama and De Silva added 50 more partnerships for the fifth wicket to help Sri Lanka post a humungous total of 344/9 in 50 overs. Hasan Ali was the pick of bowlers for Pakistan as he took four wickets in his spell of 10 overs.
Chasing 345 to get, Pakistan got off to an awful start as they lost Imam-ul-Haq and Babar Azam got dismissed early on leaving Pakistan in trouble at 37/2 inside powerplay. Mohammad Rizwan and Abdullah Shafique then led the chase for Pakistan with a beautiful partnership of 176 runs for the third wicket. Abdullah Shafique scored a magnificent century before getting dismissed by Matheesha Pathirana.
However, Mohammad Rizwan continued the chase with a solid century as he along with Saud Shakeel added 95 runs for the fourth wicket. Mohammad Rizwan remained unbeaten on 131* to help Pakistan register a record chase of 345 inside 49 overs. Matheesha Pathirana continued his poor bowling run as he ended his spell with 1/90 in 9 overs.
