Cricketer-turned-politician Manoj Tiwary wins the Shibpur constituency in Bengal Assembly elections

Trinamool Congress’ leader and cricketer-turned-politician Manoj Tiwary defeated Bhartiya Janta Party’s candidate JP’s Rathin Chakraborty in the Vidhan Sabha election of 2021, as the former leads with over 32,000 votes.

Contesting in the Shibpur Assembly constituency in the Howrah district, in the Greater Kolkata region of West Bengal, the former cricketer joined politics just ahead of the Bengal elections. The Shibpur constituency went to polls on April 10, 2021.

In the 2016 West Bengal Assembly elections, Jatu Lahiri of TMC won in this seat by defeating Jagannath Bhattacharyya of AIFB by a margin of 27,014 votes which was 15.91% of the total votes polled in the constituency. TMC had a vote share of 51.86% in 2016 in the seat.

In 2011, the same candidate of TMC won from the constituency defeating Jagannath Bhattacharyya of AIFB by a margin of 46,404 votes which was 28.48% of the total votes polled in the constituency.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, TMC got the most votes in 172. Shibpur Assembly segment of Howrah Lok Sabha constituency. TMC won the Howrah Parliament seat. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, TMC got the most votes this Assembly segment and TMC won the Howrah Parliament seat.

Manoj Tiwary leads by massive margin

In the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, the voter turnout was calculated at 77.71%. In 2016, this seat registered a turnout of 78.34%, while it was 82.31% in 2011. A total of 10 candidates contested in the 2021 elections. In 2016 there were 8 contestants and there were 6 candidates fighting for this seat in the 2011 Assembly polls.

The seat went to the polls in Phase 4 of the West Bengal Assembly elections 2021 on Saturday, April 10, 2021. Counting of votes are being held on Sunday, May 2.

The counting of votes began at 8 am, and initial leads indicated a neck-and-neck fight. Postal ballots were counted first. As the day progressed, the TMC seemed to have an advantage in the race. As of 12:11 pm, it was leading in 206 seats and the BJP in 86 and trends that showed the TMC had crossed the halfway mark in the state having 294 assembly seats.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) was racing ahead and fast consolidating its leads against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in a stiff electoral contest in the state of West Bengal, according to trends on Sunday.
