Dambulla Aura and Jaffna Kings are all set to lock horns in Match 3 of the Lankan Premier League 2022 on Wednesday, November 07 at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium in Hambantota. Dambulla will be playing their first match while Jaffna registered a 24-run victory over Galle Gladiators in the opening encounter of the competition.
Notably, Jaffna has won both the previous editions held in 2020 and 2021 and is the most successful side in the tournament. On the other hand, Dambulla suffered heartbreaks twice against two-time champions Jaffna in the last two events. In 2020, they lost in the semi-final clash by 37 runs while they came second best again by 23 runs in Qualifier 2 last year. To make matters worse for Dambulla, they are winless in six games with Jaffna as the fixtures have been completely dominated by the Kings with five victories.
Thisara Perera-led Jaffna side has some quality performers in the form of destructive wicketkeeper batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz, veteran Shoaib Malik, all-rounder Dhananjaya de Silva and mystery spinner Maheesh Theekshana. Dambulla will be led by Sri Lanka’s national team skipper Dasun Shanaka and the team consists of key players like Sikandar Raza, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, and Haider Ali.

Both sides last met in Qualifier 2 of last year’s tournament and it was Avishka Fernando who stole the show for the Kings. The right-handed opening batter smashed 100 off 64 with ten fours and four maximums as his side reached a mammoth total of 210/4 in 20 overs. Chamika Karunaratne had a forgettable outing for his spell of 1/53 in four overs. In reply, the Giants managed to reach 187/9 thanks to Karuanratne’s efforts of 75* off 47. Dambulla lost the clash by 23 runs courtesy of Fernando’s spectacular hundred.
