There’s a lot of speculations doing the rounds surrounding Chris Gayle’s international retirement. Previously, he announced that the 2019 World Cup would mark his last appearance in national colours. However, he pulled off a surprise and took part in the three-match series against India. After the series, the Jamaican has added to more suspicion, regarding him calling it quits.

On Wednesday, he scored a masterful 72 off 41 balls with the help of eight fours and five sixes. He was involved in an opening-wicket stand of 115 off a mere 65 balls along with Evin Lewis. He slapped the ball of Khaleel Ahmed to Virat Kohli and got out. Thereafter, Gayle shook hands with the Indian cricketers and then acknowledged the cheers with his helmet on top of the bat handle.

Now after the conclusion of the game at the Port of Spain, Trinidad, Gayle said that he is yet to bid adieu. “I didn’t announce any retirement,” the 39-year-old said with a smile. Asked if he is still available to play for the West Indies, Gayle stated: “Yeah, until further notice”.

One of the nicest human beings- Virat Kohli on Gayle

During the post-match press conference, Kohli, the Indian skipper, lauded Gayle on a wonderful career, not knowing that the southpaw hasn’t retired just yet. Kohli also hailed the veteran as one of nicest human beings around and said that he was fortunate enough to play alongside the hulk-like figure.

“Chris, I would like to congratulate him for a great, great career playing for West Indies. He has done so much for West Indies cricket, and he is an icon all over the world,” Virat was quoted as saying.

“One of the nicest human beings around. That to me is his nicest quality. Everyone knows about his cricket, but I think the kind of person he is – so helpful with youngsters and so fun loving and always smiling, even in the most [high] pressure situations he is always smiling. For me Chris Gayle the person is the best part of him. The cricket everyone knows,” Kohli added.

Gayle is currently the highest-capped player for the Windies in ODIs, having played 301 matches. In the second encounter, he also surpassed the great Brian Lara as the leading run-scorer for the national team in One Day Internationals.
